In this Linux guide I will describe how to rip your DVD movie disks and convert them to be played in your Apple iPod and Sony PSP. The software I am going to use is OGMRip. I have previously used OGMRip in my How to rip DVD subtitles to .srt in Linux tutorial. For those who haven't read it I should introduct OGMRip again. OGMRip is a free software developed for Linux Operating System. In general it is an application for ripping and encoding DVD into avi, ogm, mp4 or matroska files using a variety of codecs. For iPod and PSP we will need its MP4, X264 and AAC support.
Download OGMRip, install it (this should be easy through your distribution's Package Managemet System - PMS) and launch it. This is the application's main window. As you might have guessed I have tried Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex for writing this tutorial. However there is an ogmrip bug in version 0.12.2-0.0ubuntu1 of OGMRip. So if you are using Ubuntu 8.10 and you get a message like "Unknown error while merging. Please, check http://ogmrip.sf.net to see if this is a known issue." read this: Solve OGMRip error while merging

A feature of OGMRip is that it provides customisable encoding profiles. So, instead of creating our own profile we can download the two profiles provided from its web site, one for iPod and one for PSP. Visit ogmrip profiles and click on the two download links. Select File -> Save as and choose the download location.
Alternatively you can just open a terminal and save them in your desktop by typing:
cd ~/Desktop/
wget http://ogmrip.sourceforge.net/profiles/profile-psp.xml
wget http://ogmrip.sourceforge.net/profiles/profile-ipod.xml

Now go back to OGMRip and go to Edit -> Profiles and click the Import button. Select the two xml files and import them. They should appear in the Profiles window. Of course you can adjust the settings of those profiles using the Edit button.

Next insert your DVD movie in the tray and click File -> Load. Here you can select the Title for the encoded file, the Video Stream (well the longest one is the movie), the audio track and Subtitles. Moreover you can select to extract only certain chapters of the movie. When you are ready press the Extract button.

Converting to iPod format
The default options for the iPod Compatible format are a 2-pass encoding using the mp4, x264 and aac codecs. However the default output file is set to 700MB. You can change these options by editing the profile from Edit -> Profiles -> iPod Compatible format -> Edit. Either change the output size to something less or change the Bitrate. A bitrate calculator whould be useful for this job.

Return to the main program window and just click extract. In the Options pop up window select iPod Compatible and wait for the encoding to finish.

Converting to PSP format
The default options for the iPod Compatible format are a 2-pass encoding using the mp4, x264 and aac codecs. However the default output file is set to 700MB. You can change these options by editing the profile from Edit -> Profiles -> iPod Compatible format -> Edit. Either change the output size to something less or change the Bitrate. A bitrate calculator would be useful for this job.

Return to the main program window and just click extract. In the Options pop up window select PSP Compatible and wait for the encoding to finish.

After a few or not minutes the final video file will be ready. Now transfer it to your mobile device e.g. iPod or PSP and enjoy it! Of course the same procedure can be used to backup or convert your DVDs to view them in your iPhone or Nokia, Sony Ericsson etc. Mobile Phone device.
Solve OGMRip error while merging
This bug was fixed in package ogmrip - 0.12.2-0.0ubuntu2 . However this is included only in Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. To install the latest version go to System -> Administration and launch Synaptic Package Manager. Next go to Settings -> Repositories -> Third-Party Software and click the Add button. In the Apt Line paste:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty multiverse

Close this window and press the Reload button. Now search for OGMRip. You should see an updated version available. At this time this is version 0.12.2-0.0ubuntu3. Update the packages ogmrip-doc and libogmrip0 as well. Don't forget to disable the Jaunty multiverse repository once you are finished. Now you are ready to continue with encoding your movies to your mobile devices!

Need help moving ripped video file to Nintendo DS... first post to the site
Hey, hope it's ok to ask, please bear with me as it's my first time on the site, I am a member of several excellent techie (video) forums and recognize it's important to follow protocol, feel free to redirect me. I really enjoyed reading your very user-friendly, unassuming posts, some guys are fairly snobby when dealing with less experienced users.
I do tons of ripping and burning and have several paid-version proggies, convertxtodvd is my fave for avi to vso. I'm trying to put a vid on my wife's new Nintendo DS, can you direct me to the basics? I know how to use handbrake, dvdshrink etc and as I said, I'm adept at making movies (my movie collection looks like a full aisle at Blockbuster (when they existed he he) I just need some basic info if you don't mind. PS I'm not savvy at Linux, like to learn but...many thanks from the noob
