In this tutorial I will describe you how to add subtitles into a matroska .mkv file. The software I will use is mkvmerge GUI which is part of the MKVToolnix package. Both programs are available for Windows and Linux. Here I will use the Windows version. Since I suppose you already have the video file along with its .srt subtitles somewhere in your hard disk download the latest version of MKVToolnix, install it and let's get started!
This is the main window of mkvmerge GUI.
Press the Add button and first load your .mkv file. Press Add once more and load your .srt subtitles file.
In General track options under Language select the subtitles language. You may add multiple .srt subtitles and choose which one you want to be the default. Moreover set the output filename.
Now you are ready. Just press the Start Muxing butting. In a few minutes the new .mkv file will be ready.
Note: If you get a message mkvmerge failed with a return code of 2. Could not write the output file make sure the output path is correct and you have write priviledges on it.
Now just open the video with any .mkv compatible player such as VLC. It was pretty easy to mux your subs, wasn't it?

hm i muxed title in mkv...and on computer it works great....but when i play it on my 3d sony tv NO SUBTITLES at all

Alanko, you might have to enable the subtitles through your remote. Is there such an option? Or the problem could be with the language encoding you have selected. It might not be supported by your TV.

hmi checked every option, it seems it only recognize SRT format for subtitles...now i was thinking about converting SUP or SUB to SRT AFTER i made those two with 3dsubtitler program....but i cant find a program for it...i googled, i tryed subtitle workshop....vobsup....workshop cant load sup or sub....and vob sub can BUT i must manually enter EACH letter....NO WAY 
oh yea i have no problem with normal movies...i normaly watch all movies which are not in 3d....only 3d is giving me troubles with subtitles

oh yea forgot to anwser --> yes it has an option on remote and it shows there like "subtitle" like name....but when i choose it same thing...nothing shows.im talking about a file when i muxed title in MKV ....then it shows nothing...if i make normal srt title....then it stand in the middle of screen and when i switch to 3d its all mixed up everywhere....

problem with my DVD
first, thank you so much for this topic, this is what I have been looking for.
everything went great so far. But, after I burnt a dvd cd to play it in my dvd it doesn't work it says no audio. no image. !!?
Although I recall that I played mkv video before and it's working, but now I don't no what's the problem.
I hope you can help me out here.

Hi Ali, thank you for your comment. Have you tried playing the converted file on your computer? You can also try an mkv file that you haven't altered with mkvmerge to make sure if your DVD player supports mkv.

Yeah, I did, and it's working well. but when I checked an mkv file that haven't altered with mkvmerge on my dvd player, it doesn't work!!
so I think the problem is that my dvd player does not support mkv at all

Not working
I did the above steps (using 5.2.1 version), it finished without any error but when i tried to play the file it is not playing at all. i tried 2 players which both playing the file without subs. Any idea? Thank you

Open mmg.exe ang to File > Options. Is "Disable header removal compression for audio and video by default" selected or not? If it is selected, deselect it, load the movie and mux it again.

Can you do one more test? Load the mkv file, select the video track and in Extra Options set Compression to none. Do the same for the audio track. Afterwards mux it again.

Taking long time

mkvtoolnix doesn't hardcode subtitles. In fact I don't know any program that can do this for mkv files. I'll take a look and see if I can find something.
For the time being the only solution I can think is to convert your mkv to another format and hardcode subs to it.

problem with subtitles
Hi, I just finished muxing a .srt subtitle to a mkv file, muxing was completed succesfully but when I played the file @ my br player to my smart tv the subtitles were a little strange, I mean when there is on sentence of subtitle was ok but when there was two sentences of subtitles the first sentence was not centered, it appeared at the left side of the screen, the other sentence under was ok (centered), what to do to fix this?

Queue more mkv's
Hi, I've worked with the tool and it works fine. But when I use it for TV series with like 15 epidodes I would like to have the option to do more than 1 mkv file at the time of at least queue them.
Is this possible??

SRT+MP4 to be played in Sony 3D Blue Ray Player
Sorry for interrupting guys.
Heyy guys I am really expecting someone to reply to this post.Please do help.Im trying from past 1 month to embed (hardcode and soft) for watching MP4 movies (720p & 1080p) in my sony 3D Blue Ray player which supports only mp4 not evn avi,or mkv.I ve tried many many methods,nothing worked well,either quality drops or the the converting wont cmplete due to unexpected errors.I have tried a lot of softwares like,FORMAT FACTORY(works well with avi files,which are playable in my dvd player,when i try mp4 it reaches till 98% or so and some error is shown),XILLISOFT(Quality dropped)then tried all MUXing methods too,TOTAL VIDEO CONVERTER(HUGE FILE IT BECOMES,like 8.70GB ). pLease guys hope someone will help me out Thanks!

Hi Nick, I am sorry for not replying sooner. When you import the mkv file can you check if you can see an audio file under Tracks, chapters and tags?

MKV movie won't play after add subtitles

I hope u can help me..Before this I have download a movie in MKV format and it play fine on sony blu ray player but once I have add the subtitles (SRT File) by using MKVmerge gui,it no longer can be played on blu ray player and only can played on pc..

This is why your movie no longer can be played at DVD player
all files that have been converted with mkvmerge(adding sub sound etc)has been changed by mkvmerge itself into a mkv files, so if you want this file can be played like before(with dvd or some else) you have convert this movie back into its old file type

about playing @ external dvds
hello everybody i concern my self very lucky i've found this conversation you've been very helpful all of you!! i had the problem with subs not showed up when i burned a dvd and played at my samsund blu-ray.. the solution i configured out myself is to make a DATA disk and not a dvd video! i placed in the same folder my movie-s and the sub-s and it worked!! of they got to have exactly the same name.. and i think almost all of the relatively new media players can read most of sub formats!! greetings to all of ya from Greece!!!!! have a nice summer..

konstantin select the srt file you loaded and after you select the language (Greek, (Modern 1453-)) go to the second tab named "Format Specific Options and change the Charset to "GREEK". That worked for me!

Try to play the muxed mkv file at another media player or a computer if possible to check if it plays correctly.
If yes, there's an issue with your MP. Tried this in my VU+ Uno and my WD TV Live and it works fine

Try a WD TVLive
WD TVLive will play all these files, mkv, srt, mkv with subs added via mkvmerge, and all the usual avi, mp4, mov, mp3, flac, ape. About the only things it won't play are ogg and shn. Plus, you can connect two USB hard drives to it if you want (or flash drives), and store a ton of content. it's pretty easy to use, and less then $100. No, I don't work for WD!
