Linux Books

Of course the Internet along with the help of Google is a great source of information. You can answer almost any question you have about Linux and find many tutorials, guides and help. However many people prefer reading this information on a printed book accesssible even when they are not online or don't have a computer in front of them. I've received many e-mails asking me to propose them a few good books regarding Linux commands, administration and for specific distributions such as Ubuntu, Fedora etc. So, I've search for a few good books. Here they are. Happy reading!

Since youtube and google video have become so popular, downloading videos published there is a must. There are many ways and many web sites that can help you.
**Note: In order to view the downloaded videos you need an flv player. You can download one freeware from here.

**Note: If you don't want to keep the videos as flv files and you want to convert them to avi or any other format you can find below some programms to convert them. **Note: If you want to download videos from many other sites you can also check our guide How to download videos from various sites

So, lets examine some of them.

1. Download using Firefox

Firefox makes it very easy for you to download videos from Youtube, Google, Myspace, Metacafe, iFilm, Dailymotion, Pornotube... and other 60+ video sites as well as all embedded objects on a webpage (movies, mp3s, flash, quicktime, etc).

First if you don't have firefox already installed download it from here:

Next you must install the extension that will do the job for you. Go to this page and press 'Install Now'. When the installation completes restart firefox. Now you should see an icon like that in the image below at the bottom left of Firefox.

A new window will pop up. Left click on the 'Download Link' button and download the video file. When the download is complete you must change the file extension to .flv. Moreover you need an flv player to watch the video file offilne. A link is provided by the extension as well.

2. Download using keepvid.com

KeepVid.com is a web site that lets you download videos from many video-related web sites, in only three steps.

a. Choose the site you want to download from.

b. Copy the link of the page with the video on it and paste it in the textbox.

c. Use an .flv player to watch the video.

Although this procedure is used by many users, it is clumsy as far as the .flv format isn’t very popular and an flv player/converter will be needed.

3. Download using Vdownloader

Vdownloader is a great program that enables you to download videos from four video sites in mpeg/avi/psp format.

a. Download vdownloader from here.

b. Hit the options menu and edit your preferences. You can choose between three video formats, choose the video size and the audio bitrate.

c. Enter the video url.

d. Hit download, and the video is yours.

4. Download using vixy.net

These instructions work only with youtube videos.

a. Open a youtube video and copy the url from the address bar. It should be something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2siUGs4B_YA

b. Go to http://vixy.net

c. Paste the link in the text box.

d. Press Start. When the conversion is finished you will get a download link with the video in avi format.

e. Open it with your usual avi player. No more flv players needed!

Have Fun!
