A few days ago Google released Chrome OS , a public preview of its upcoming Operating System. Chrome OS is an open source project and it's available for download. Although it still isn't stable many of you want for sure to test it. In this guide I will describe you how to install Chrome OS on VirtualBox. VirtualBox will allow us to make a virtual installation of Chrome OS while leaving our main operating system untouched. Here is the guide!Note: If you plan on buying a Dell mini 10v netbook
First of all you have to download a vmdk image file provided by Google from gdgt.com (registration is needed). Of course you can find chromeos-image-999.999.32309.211410-a1.vmdk in many torrent and rapidshare sites.
Next download VirtualBox. VirtualBox is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS. If you are using Linux prefer to install it through your Package Manager System, e.g. synaptic for Ubuntu and yum for Fedora.
Run VirtualBox and click on the New button.

The New Virtual Machine Wizard will start. Just press Next.

In the VM Name and OS Type window type a name for your VirtualMachine, ChromeOS for example. In Operating System select Linux and in Version Ubuntu. Press Next.

In the Memory window select the amount of RAM Chrome OS will use. Be careful here. This number depends on the RAM amount you have available in your computer. I have 8GB of RAM and here I have given 4GB to VirtualBox.

In the Virtual Hard Disk window we have to select the image we downloaded previously. Select Use existing hard disk and press the folder icon.

Virtual Media Manager will open. Here press Add and browse to the dolder you have the Chrome OS image file with the .vmdk extension. When you load it click on it and press the Select button.

Afterwards press Next and Finish.

Chrome OS VirtualMachine will appear in the list. Select it and press Start.

If everything is ok the following screen will appear (and it will appear pretty fast even though this is a Virtual installation of Chrome OS!). Use your Google account to login.

And here is Chrome OS. Google's operating system which runs through the Chromium browser. Each application runs in a diffrent tab. Enjoy!
A little note. If you click inside VirtualBox window it will catch your mouse cursor. To release it press the right Ctrl button.
Oh and something else. I can't find a button to shut it down. :P Just press Ctrl to release the mouse and in the VirtualBox window select Machine -> ACPI shutdown. It will do the work. :)
