ConvertXtoDVD 4 is out! I believe you all know ConvertXtoDVD. Just in case, ConvertXtoDVD is a top video conversion software that makes it easy for you to convert any video file and author your own DVD, create personalized menus with many templates, add subtitles, add effects to your videos and burn them directly to DVDs. ConvertXtoDVD version 4 has many improvements, although its interface has remained the same. Conversion quality has become better thanks to the new 2 pass encoding feature. Moreover new resizing filters were developed by VSO so that you can upscale/downscale your videos with the best result. Furthermore since conversion speed is as important as conversion quality ConvertXtoDVD has now multicore support. Of course the new Windows 7 are supported.Video formats supported: avi, divx, xvid, mov, mkv, flv , mpeg1, mpeg2, mpeg-, nsv, dvr-ms, ts, ifo, vob, asf, wmv, realmedia, rm, rmvb, ogm, existing files from digital camcorders, TV/Sat, capture cards, etc. No external codecs needed like avi codec download.
You can free download ConvertXtoDVD or buy ConvertXtoDVD. Just install it and run it so that we can move on with the rest of the guide!
Add your video files
First add the video files you want to convert to DVD so that you can watch them on any standalone DVD player. Simply click on the green cross to add your videos.
ConvertXtoDVD will automatically create a DVD menu and each video file will become a separate titleset. Since a DVD disk has certain space the more files you add the worst the quality of the final DVD will be since ConvertXtoDVD will encode them to fit in a single disk. Therefore you can have a look at the "Conversion advisor" to see what the quality will be. For about 2h of video quality will be excellent. For less than 4h you will have pretty good quality and you can watch the movie without any problems. If you are converting TV series episodes of 40 minutes each, 4 episodes are enough for a 4.7GB DVD.
If you expand the "DVD Options" you can customize the DVD Template, play videos one after another, rename your DVD and choose the text style you like. A few more options were added here from the previous.
ConvertXtoDVD comes with some very good templates which you can see by double clicking on the Template option. Unfortunately the templates are the same with the previous version.
In the next screenshot you can see the font adjustments available which appear if you double click on the "All Menu Pages text style editor". You can also access the same settings from Settings -> Subtitiles -> Subtitle text rendering settings.
Titleset Options
In the titleset menu you can also add thumbnails of each titleset for easier and faster access to them. By default the thumbnail will be taken from the first frame of each video. However you can change this by double clicking on the thumbnail option (1).
You can also add subtitles to each titleset. If you had the subtitles in the same folder with each video file and they also have the same name they will be automatically inserted, you should see something like (1 stream) (1). If you don't right click on the "Subtitle (0 stream)" and browse to where you keep them.
The video preview window which is available by clicking on the preview button (1) allows you to see how your final DVD menu will look like.
At this point you can also choose to create an animated DVD menu with background music! You can choose a custom video/image or a clip taken from the converted video. In the same way you can add your own mp3 audio file playing in the background. You can select background audio and video for Root menu, Chapter menu and Audio/Subtitle settings.
Regarding the video settings of the output DVD you can change its resolution, fps, aspect ratio (16:9 for wide screens and 4:3 for full screen), and the video resize method.
General Settings
Let's take a lookt at the settings. You can access more settings by clicking on Settings -> General. Here in the "General" tab you can change the location where all DVD files will be placed (1). Be sure that you have many GBs of free space.
In the "Chapters" tab you can create Chapters in each Titleset for easier browsing them. Default value is 5 minutes for titlesets longer than 15 minutes.
Next in "DVD specification" you can select between PAL (for Europe) and NTSC (for US and Asia), as well as adjust the video resolution just in case you want to do this. Default values are ok however.
In the "Encoding" tab you can adjust Encoding Quality/Speed. Better quality means worst encoding speed. You choose. You can also select the size of the DVD disk you are going to use, such as DVD-5 or DVD-9. Here you are advised to select Two pass encoding since the final DVD quality will be much better although it will take longer to complete.
In the "Video processing" tab make sure you set the maximum numbers of cores your processor has e.g. 2 for Intel Core 2 Duo and 4 for Intel Quad Core. This will enhance the conversion speed.
Convert your DVD!
When you are ready just click on the Convert button and wait whiel ConvertXtoDVD encodes your new DVD!
When the conversion is over you will be prompted to insert a blank DVD disk in your DVD burner and the burn process will start.
In the links below you can find three bonus menu templates for using with ConvertXtoDVD!
In the links below you can download animated videos which can be used as background videos in your DVDs. After looking at the previews click on the name of the video, then select either Pal or NTSC, then right click on the link and select Save target as and the download will begin. You can play the file with Windows Media Player or VLC for example.
**Note: The downloads are in DVD format and therefore in better quality than the preview provided here:
- aura lights (preview)
- autumn breeze (preview)
- blue water (preview)
- crackling fire (preview)

You are welcome Don.
It would be a nice feature to be able to burn mp3 files on the DVD as well, but I don't think that ConvertXtoDVD supports this.

You can try running ConvertXtoDVD through Wine. I tried it in the past but I had some problems with the themes.
Alternatively take a look at those guides. You might like one of those two programs for authoring DVDs in Linux.

i tried to use DeVeDe... had trouble. i was converting a roughly 800meg avi file to DVD NTSC format and it told me that the finished file would be more than 2 Gig.!!!
with convertx to dvd a file converted from avi to dvd format still stays around the same size.
is there a reason for this??? just curious

I don't know why this happens stephen. I guess it has to do with the codecs used. What about 2ManDVD?
Audio out of sync when converting mkv files on older versions
Thank you very much for this great guide! I thought I pretty much had it down but you showed my new things I should have been using! Is the audio out of sync on this newer version when converting mkv files? It is pretty much a known issue with the earlier version(s), that you have to offset the audio by 200ms when converting mkv. Just curious as I am still using v3.8.0.193. Thanks!
...
Hi roadblock, you are welcome!
I haven't tried converting an mkv file with ConvertXtoDVD v.4. I took a look at the ConvertXtoDVD changelog and it mentions
ConvertXtoDVD - 3.6.6.162
- 0002648: [Bug] Some MKV files with h264 and aac streams, are out of sync after conversion. (wesson) - resolved.
Your ConvertXtoDVD version is newer than that. What kind of mkv file (video and audio codecs) are you trying to convert and you experience out of sync problems? I can give it a try with a similar file in v.4. Of course you can download a trial version and check it on your own. What ever you prefer.

Hey axel,
How's it going? The video and audio codecs associated with the mkv files I have tried to convert are ... video x264 - audio DTS and video x264 and audio ac3. I have converted many mkv files with ConvertXtoDVD and have had to offset the audio by 200ms on all of them. Not much of a hassle at all. After much reasearch and a ton of googling I found that most people converting mkv files with ConvertXtoDVD had to offset the audio by 200ms to get it synced up. I have tried many other programs out there and they ALL end up with the audio out of sync as well. I am definitely going to try version 4 and will post back the results. Thanks again for all your hard work!

Hey axel,
Tried version 4 and it does the same thing. Acutally, I offset the audio by 195ms and that syncs it up perfectly! Thanks!

Hey roadblock,
well it seems that those 195ms sync in matroska files is something you will have to live with.
Anyway, since the audio syncs perfectly everything is ok.

Thank's for your really good softtware.
Dvds are alive and many people still use them...
Using your programme my questions are:
1) I always ask for a final DVD size of 4300gb, (input = "mkv" files) but i never have it !!!
2) And I don't see any option to put the video-bitrate i want ,manually.
Is this possible?
Will this be possible in the future?
Thank you.

Hi chrchr, you are welcome.
I am not the developer of ConvertxToDVD. I've just written a few guides about it since I consider it a very good DVD authoring software. You could find more info at the official VSO site.

axel, great job with the tutorial! It helped out a lot. smilies/grin.gif My only problem is that in the Titleset Menu Parameters I don't have option to change background video. I'm using v4.0.4.313. Is there another way to do this?!

Nevermind I kept playing around and realized it was the template I was using that stopped me from seeing it. smilies/tongue.gif
What happened?
I burned a converted file to a dvd and when I went to play it in my DVD player...it wouldn't play...it didn't even recognize that a disk was in.
What happened..I was using the newest version of Convert x to DVD. I've used other versions and had no problems.

Hi Babyjane, most probably this might be a problem with the version you've used. The latest version as far as I can see is 4.0.9.322. If you don't have it download it. You could give a try to a previous version as well.
I have a problem getting a 4 gig disc to fill up
I do some tx shows and usually its MKV. On CON 3 i would do 4 45 minute episodes and it would fill the disc space.I got CON4 and even though I do 2 passes it only fills half the disc space.I've tried several options but its always the same...ie half the disc space and half the quality.
Could you please tell the proper settings
Thanks in advance

Hi BotFreak, ConvertXtodVD isn't supposed to fill the full DVD. Moreover the DVD standard resolution (720 x 480 NTSC, 720 x 576 PAL) is much less than the one of MKV which is High Definition video. That's why you see a quality loss from the original video.
Subtitle settings
I don't know what I'm doing wrong with CenvertXtoDVD, but I never get the subtitles in the font or size I want. Whatever font or font size I choose in the settings menu, the output is always the same. I'm using version 4.
...
Hi janusvh, I just did a test with ConvertXtoDVD 4.0.4.313 and the subtitles adopted the changes I made in the subtitles settings. When you make a change in the subtitles settings ConvertXtoDVD asks you if you want to the new settings to the current project. I guess you press Yes there, right? If you have a version older than mine (Help > About > File version information) try to download a newer version and check again if the problem persists.
Subtitles
Thank you for your promt reply! I have tried the latest version (4.0.10.324), with the same results. I'm using *.srt subtitles, made with Subtitle Workshop. I also discovered that the font settings menu can be opened in two ways. First by using the icon on the right of the start screen, second by clicking the subtitle line in the tree menu. Both menus look the same, but changes made in one of them, are not showing in the other one. I'm a little puzzled. :-)
...
This seems to be a bug in ConvertXtoDVD... I don't get any settings window if I click in the tree menu. Anyway try to make the changes through Settings > Subtitles > Subtitle text rendering settings and apply the new settings to the current project. I believe this should work for you.
...
The procedure you described - Settings > Subtitles > Subtitle text rendering settings - is exactly what I do, but... ConvertXToDVD refuses to show those settings in the end result. I tried it on 3 different computers... Maybe I'm bewitched?
...
Could it be a problem with the theme you are using? I've tried the Black mirror template. If this doesn't solve your problem either the only thing I can think of is that this bug was inserted in some version after the one I have...
Subtitles
I discovered something strange... I had installed ConvertXtoDVD in my mother tongue - which is Dutch - and today I had the strange idea to change it to English. And you know what? My subtitles font settings are accepted now... Anyway, thanks again for your prompt replies.
"Custom"
Do you call it "custom DVD"? Could be if the user could add his/her own picture, font size etc.
...
Have you tried the program or read the guide? Of course the user can add his own picture, video, mp3, adjust fonts etc.
my file are less than 4GB and don't fit to the disc.
I burned 4 files, all together 3500 MB. It burned the first 3 files perfectly, but the last movie was half missing. Shouldn't it send an error message before I start to burn? What am I doing wrong? Thank for your help.
...
I'm sorry for the delay vivi. I thought I had replied to your comment...
It seems to me that your DVD didn't burn correctly. Have you tried burning it again?
Also it's good to have the latest version since many bugs are corrected.
