Very often you may want to watch your DVDs in a portable device such as your iPhone or even at your PC without having to look for the original DVD disk. Moreover you might want to extract the soundtrack of a DVD movie and copy it your mobile phone. This process is known as DVD ripping. Copying the content of a DVD to your hard disk of course allows you to further edit or convert it at your needs.
Xilisoft DVD Ripper Platinum can rip DVDs to many video and audio formats such as avi, mpeg4, wmv, divx, rm, mov, xvid, 3gp, flv, swf, mp3, wma, wmv, m4a, aac, ac3 and others. So, download Xilisoft DVD Ripper Platinum, install it and let's get started.Below you can see the main window of that software.
Insert a DVD into your DVD rom drive and select File -> Open DVD -> The name of the movie (1). Alternatively you can click the DVD button to open the DVD (2). Moreover you can open IFO files that you have already at your hard disk (3).
Once the DVD is loaded information about its chapters and each chapter's Duration, Title, Audio and Subtitles will be shown. IF you have Internet Connetion you can click the Get Disk Info button (1) and the software will retrieve DVD information from the web.
Next click on the Profile drop down list (1) to select the output format. As you can see there is a wide list of differented supported profiles. Of course you can adjust them to suit your needs or create your own profiles and save them for later use.
To change the settings of a profile click the arrow next to Profile Settings. Here you can adjust things such as audio and video quality, video size, audio and video bitrate etc. You can also split the output video to fit into cds using the Split menu. Later I will show you how to fit the movie into a single 700/800 recordable cd.
Another feature of this application is that you can rip different titles of the DVD using different settings. To do that select a title from the list and select a profile for it as show above. Next click the Add profile button (1) and select a new profile from the list.
If you want to set a custom size for the output video such as 800MB, in order to copy it into a cd, select a Title and click on Tools -> Bitrate Calculator. In the pop up window set the File Size nd Audio Bitrate you prefer. The calculator will show you how much to set the Video Bitrate.
Click the Ok button and the changes will be automatically applied to the profile's Video quality (1) and Audio quality (2).
Finally click the Browse button (1) to select the directory where the final video will be saved. Make sure you have enough free space there.
If you are ready click the red Start ripping button and the process will begin. You can view the status of the ripping process from the status bar (1). Information on how much time is left is also available from the progress bar at the bottom (2). At any time you can Pause or Stop (3) the process.
When ripping is finished click the Open button (1) to go to the output directory and watch the result video!
Extra Features
Rip Video Clip Segment
Xilisoft DVD Ripper allows you to select on more segments of the DVD to rip. Select the Title you want (1) and click the Clip button (2).
In the pop up window grab the left edge of the timeline (1) and move it to the start time you want. Click on the Set Clip Start Point button (2) and do the same thing with the right edge of the timeline (3). You can add as many clips as you want by pressing the New Clip button (4). Moreoever you can adjust the Volume of the output clip (5). You can also merge the clips to a single one if you tick the Output segments as whole one box (6). Once ready click the Apply button (7) and next the Ok button (8).
The new segments will appear with a scissors in front of them (1). Click the Start ripping button (2) and wait for the process to end.
Take Snapshot
You can also take a snapshot image of the video file. Press the play button (1) below the preview screen and move to the wanted scene. Next push the Snapshot button (2). You can configure the output directory location if you can press the down arrow (3). To get fast to that directory click the Open Snapshot Folder button (4).

You can download Xilisoft DVD Ripper Platinum trial version. However this trial version has some limitations such as only 5 minutes of video will be converted and if the video file is shorter than 5 minutes only half of it will be converted. Morever the settings of Duration and Start time are unavailable. Finally fixed items through Clip and Segment won't be converted.
