Linux Books

Of course the Internet along with the help of Google is a great source of information. You can answer almost any question you have about Linux and find many tutorials, guides and help. However many people prefer reading this information on a printed book accesssible even when they are not online or don't have a computer in front of them. I've received many e-mails asking me to propose them a few good books regarding Linux commands, administration and for specific distributions such as Ubuntu, Fedora etc. So, I've search for a few good books. Here they are. Happy reading!

I believe you all know Firefox, Mozilla's cutting edge web browser. Those of you who don't should really give it a try! Below I have gathered some tweaks, customizations, modifications and tips that I use and that can make your Firefox look better, feel better and act better according to your needs. Of course any time I find something new and useful I will update this page. Feel free to propose any tip, trick or add-on you think is worth mentioning!

Awesome Bar

Firefox's 3 address bar, also known as Awesome Bar, suggests web sites addresses as you type. Below there are some changes to make awesome bar even better and adjust it to your needs.

  • Edit Middle (extension)
Edit Middle 2 is an extension that shows AwesomeBar's results when editing in the middle (not just at the end). This makes it easier to correct typos or change search terms and immediately see new results.

  • Hide Unvisited (extension)
Hide pages (bookmarks) that you haven't visited from showing in the AwesomeBar. This is for users that don't want to see any bookmarks showing up unless they've used the bookmark since deleting certain pages/sites or clearing the history.

Note: this add-on will set the following two preferences to 0, so if you uninstall this add-on, you may want to reset these values: places.frecency.unvisited{Bookmark,Typed}Bonus

  • Enter Selects (extension)
Press enter in the AwesomeBar to select the first result (without pressing down)

  • oldbar (extension)
Oldbar makes the location (URL) bar look like Firefox 2

  • Location's Bar Number of Suggestions (tweak)
By default Firefox's 3 Location Bar displays 12 results. You can change this number by typing about:config in the location bar and then browser.urlbar.maxRichResults in the Filter. Double click on it and set your desired number of results.

about:config tweaks

To use the following tweaks first type about:config in the url bar. Firefox 3 will display a message that this might void your warranty. Just click the 'I'll be careful, I promise' button and be careful. ;)

  • Skip Extensions Installation Delay
When you install a new extension the Install button is disabled by a small delay in order to protect you from installing malicious software. To have no delay at all paste security.dialog_enable_delay into the Filter box. Double click it and change its value to as many seconds as you want the delay to be.

ff_delay.png

  • Enable Spell Checking in One-Line Input Fields
To enable spell checking in One-Line input Fields (such as e-mail subjects and blog titles) paste layout.spellcheckDefault into the Filter box. Double click on it and change its value to 2.

ff_typo.png

  • Increase History Undo Close Tab Limit
By default you can undo, open, 10 recently closed tabs. To increase or decrease that number paste browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo into the Filter box. Double click on it and change its value to as many as you want.

  • Enable/Disable Single Click to Select Whole URL in Location Bar
To enable/disable single click select paste browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll into the Filter box. True selects the whole url while false doesn't.

  • Set a Single Close Tab Button
If you prefer having a single close button at right instead of a sepperate close button in each tab paste browser.tabs.closeButtons into the Filter box. Double click on it and change its value to 3.

  • Show More Tabs on Firefox Window before Scrolling
To have more tabs appear on Firefox's window before you have to scroll through them paste browser.tabs.tabMinWidth into the Filter box. Double click on it and change its value to something like 80 or whatever you like.

  • Enable Paste with Middlemouse Click
In Linux by default if you click somewhere you paste what you have in your clipboard. In Windows this is disabled. To enable it paste middlemouse.paste into the Filter box. Double click on it and change its value to True.

  • Right Click View Source in Your Favorite Editor
If you want to use another editor instead of Firefox's default one to view a web page's html source code paste view_source.editor.external into the Filter box. Double click on it and change its value to True. Next paste view_source.editor.path into the Filter box. Double click on it and change its value to your editor's path e.g. C:\Program Files\Notepad ++\notepad++.exe.

  • Change Firefox's UserAgent
If you use a non branded Firefox, such as Minefield, and you have problems with sites saying that your browser isn't compatible with them paste general.useragent.extra.firefox into the Filter box. Double click on it and change its value to Firefox/3.0.

Quick Search for any Search Box

You can use any search box along with a custom keyword to make searching easier in Firefox 3. To make it clearer let's say you use very often my-guides.net search engine. Right click on it and select Add a keyword for this search....

ff_quicksearch1.png

Enter a name, let's say my-guides.net, and a keyword, let's say mg.

ff_quicksearch2.png

Now if you type for example mg firefox in the location bar you will be directed to my-guides search engine's results. In the same way you may create as many quick searches as you want for the sites you use everyday!

RAMBack is outdated?
This was truly amazing and helpful! Thanks, kind Computer God!

But is it true RAMBack doesn't work on the new version of FireFox? I use version 3.0.4. What's your take on this?

...
You're welcome Tom!

I have stopped using this a long time ago so I can't really tell. Do you see any decrease in your RAM after you use it? To test it you can open 10 tabs, close them, and see what happens to your RAM before and after you fire up RAMBack. I am also going to test it. smilies/wink.gif smilies/cheesy.gif
