ConvertXtoDVD is a well known, award winning dvd authoring software that makes it easy for you to convert any video file in DVD format, add subtitles, create personalized menus and add effects to your videos. A new version has been released and new features have been added whereas ConvertXtoDVD also supports Windows Vista and multi-core processors. Video formats supported: avi, divx, xvid, mov, mkv, flv, mpeg-1, mpeg-2, mpeg-4, nsv, dvr-ms, tivo, ts, ifo, vob, asf, wmv, realmedia, rm, rmvb, ogm, existing files from digital camcorders, TV/Sat, capture cards, etc. No external codecs needed like avi codec download. You can free download ConvertXtoDVD or buy ConvertXtoDVD . Just install it and run it so that we can move on with the rest of the guide!Add your video files
First you must load the video files you want to convert to a DVD so that you can watch them on any standalone DVD player. Simply click on the green cross to add your videos (1).
ConvertXtoDVD will automatically create a DVD menu and each video file will become a separate titleset (1). Since a DVD disk has certain space the more files you add the worst the quality of the final DVD will be since ConvertXtoDVD will encode them to fit in a single disk. Therefore you can have a look at the "Conversion advisor" (2) to see what the quality will be. For about 1h 30m of video quality will be excellent. For less than 3h you will have pretty good quality. You can watch the movie without any problems.

If you expand the "DVD Options" you can customize the DVD Template, play videos one after another, rename your DVD and choose the text style you like. For more information on how to customize your menu template take a look at the end of this guide in the Tips & Tricks.

ConvertXtoDVD comes with some very good templates which you can see by double clicking on the Template option (1).

In the next screenshot you can see the font adjustments available which appear if you double click on the "Menu text style editor".

Titleset Options
In the DVD menu you can also add thumbnails of each titleset for easier and faster access to them. By default the thumbnail will be taken from the first frame of each video. However you can change it (1).
You can also add subtitles to each titleset. If you had the subtitles in the same folder with each video file and they also have the same name they will be automatically inserted, you should see something like (1 stream) (1). If you don't right click on the "Subtitle (0 stream)" and browse to where you keep them.

A preview window is available by clicking on the preview button (1).

General Settings
You can access more settings by clicking on Settings -> General. The following window will appear.
Here in the "General" tab you can change the location where all DVD files will be placed (1). Be sure that you have many GBs of free space.

In the "Chapters" tab you can create Chapters in each Titleset for easier browsing them. Default value is 5 minutes (1).

Next in "the TV Format" you can select between PAL (for Europe) and NTSC (for US and Asia) (1), as well as adjust the video resolution (2) just in case you want to do this. Default values are ok however.

In the "Encoding" tab you can adjust Encoding Quality/Speed (1). Better quality means worst encoding speed. You choose. You can also select the size of the DVD disk you are going to use, such as DVD-5 or DVD-9 (2).

In the "Burning" tab you can select your DVD disk speed (1) as well as some other options. Speed of 4x is advised for better results.

Convert it!
When you are ready just click on the Convert button and sit back will ConvertXtoDVD encodes your new DVD!
After a while you will be prompted to insert a blank DVD disk in your DVD burner and the burn process will start.

Tips & Tricks
Animated DVD menu with Music
Now ConvertXtoDVD allows you to create an animated DVD menu and even add music to it! When you select a Template you can click on the + next to "Title Menu parameters" to see what items you can customize for the Title Menu. Some templates have more or less customizable items. Here you can change the title text, Background video and background audio (1) in Title menu. If you use a title that is to long you will see that the green circle (2) will become red. So be careful!

Under each video file you added there is a section called "Menu parameters" (1). Here you can define the settings related to the menu for each video file you added. You can edit the text for titles, edit the action buttons that are displayed in the menus and finally you can have a video and/or audio playing in the background.

If you double click on the Background video and Background audio you can select to "Use a custom file" (1), specify at what time in the video file you want the sequence to start from (2) and you can also apply a transparancy effect for your video (3). The values should be between 0 = transparent and 255 = opaque. At the end of this convertxtodvd guide you can find some animated videos which you can download and use as background video in current templates.

Merge video files
With ConvertXtoDVD you can also merge different video files. Add the first video file you want and right click on it to select "Merge more files to this titleset" (1) or alternatively click on the merge icon on the right side of the window (2).

In the "Titleset content editor" window that will appear click on the video tape icon (1) to merge a file to it. ConvertXtoDVD will join these two files into one removing any playback gap you could have had if you played them separatelly.

The new file will appear next to the first one. In case you have addition subtitles you can add them in the same way. Again remember that if the subtitle file has the same name with the video file it will be automatically imported. When you are finished press the OK button. Imagine this window as a timeline going from left to right.

Now when you return to the main window if you click on "File set" (1) you will see a list of all the files that will be converted! Click on Convert and let the program do the rest for you.

Extra Templates
In the links below you can find three bonus menu templates for using with ConvertXtoDVD!In the links below you can download animated videos which can be used as background videos in your DVDs. After looking at the previews click on the name of the video, then select either Pal or NTSC, then right click on the link and select Save target as and the download will begin. You can play the file with Windows Media Player or VLC for example.

Hey andre, you can try virtualdub. It has some filters, such as shapen, that could enhance your video qualiy.
I have written a guide about virtualdub. Take a look at it here to get a hint:

Here is what I found on VSO's site:

If your burner is recognized by the software, but you cannot click on the burn button that is because your burner does not recognize the media that is inserted in the drive, or it will not accept to burn onto that disc (because it is not blank). If the disc is blank, make sure that it is the type of disc required for your project (CD if you are trying to burn an audio CD, DVD if you are trying to burn video, etc). It can be that the burner simply does not like that type of disc, try another type or brand of media. Making sure DMA mode is activated and that you are using the latest firmware available will increase the compatibility of your burner with various media (see manufacturer's website).

yes axel, they remain the same. The weird part is that even when I authored the same DVD without menu, all titles returned to title one unless you let the DVD play through without ever pressing next, previous or even rewind, ffwrd. I am dying here to get them play as I want. As a newbie I don't know what else to do. I tried in DVDRemake to get all titles into just one but I got a "different destination stream" error for some of the tiles as it's a compilation from different DVDs. I guess the best solution would be for VSO to create a "play all" button or something. Thanks for your prompt reply!

Are you playing the DVD in a DVD player or in your computer? I just created a DVD and tried it in SMplayer and VLC. SMPlayer played the files one after the other. VLC also played the titles sequentially. It just showed an image of the next title (not the root menu). Maybe there is a setting in your DVD player, I don't know.

subtitles?
The description of the subtitle option did not seem clear to me. Do they get added in a "hard" way? Or is there a way to make an option for the dvd that would allow to switch them on/off?
Thank you.

Hey Akhe, the subtitles aren't hardcoded. You can set them on/off through your remote control as with any other dvd you buy. You can also have more than one subtitles if you wish.

Andrew,
the quality of the DVD depends on the video you are going to author. If it's an avi with not so good quality convertxtodvd won't enhance its quality. Of course if your initial video has pretty good quality and it was going to lose it because of the compression in order to fit in a DVD5 now it won't. I hope I was clear. :/
Assesino,
You are right about this. It must be a bug. I will contact VSO and let them know in order to fix it. Thanks.

so in the case where i would be loosing quality due too high quality avi, if i used a dual layer dvd would i keep the quality of the avi because of the 8 gigabite storage. it says whenever i put a movie onto the program it always only says good quality but when i tweaked the settings to say dvd-9 the quality increases to excellent. is it that much of a significantr?
...
Yes you are right. I think the best way is to test it yourself is to create a DVD using both DVD5 and DVD9. Then don't burn it. Instead watch it using a DVD player such as VLC and check how it looks like. Maybe the loss in quality isn't that big to spend more money for a DVD9. It always depends on what your needs are.

Ah, you meant the final DVD disk. I guess your video file's duration is more than 5 secs right? In DVD options do you have "Loop playback" enabled? If so disable it and try again to see what happens.

Angelo try this as well. Redo the conversion wit the options "Burn result to DVD" and/or "Delete folder after successful burn" unchecked. Use the latest VLC to check if there are synchronization problems. If there are check "Don't check/fix audio discontinuities" (in settings under "Audio" tab) redo the conversion and see if the result is any better. At least this way you won't burn DVDs that don't work. Also just to be sure download the latest version of convertxtodvd
Jud,
If you can't browse the files of the dvd in your computer it's a burning problem.
Are your burning the disk using the full speed of your dvd writer? I read that many people burn their dvds using half the max speed they support, e.g. burn 16x media at x8.0 max.

If you had no problems with the same movie and dvd disk in your work then your dvd writer might be problematic. Have you tried burning a simple data dvd with it?
VLC is a media player. Since you use WMP and the output is ok no prob.
DVD-R and DVD+R are supported from different companies. DVD-R is oldest and for this reason if you have an old DVD player it might work better with DVD-R disks. DVD+R has a more robust error management system than DVD-R which means fewer unusable or damaged dvds. Apart from that, it doesn't have any effect on the quality of your video. I hope you got a clue now.

If you have an old dvd writer it might not support dvd-r disks. The new ones support both formats.
I don't know if dvd+r are better for data. I just haven't heard this before. I can't say if its true. With dvd-r I don't have problems with both video and data.

Rick,
I'll have a look and reply to you soon.
adhithya,
Since you had audio in ap1 and 2 but not in 3 that's really strange! Are all 3 files encoded with the same Audio codec? You can check this with gspot
Which ConvertXtoDVD version are you using? Just in case download convertxtovd latest version. There are some DTS and AC3 audio issues fixed in the latest version.
Another advise I can give you is not to burn in more than 4x speed.
Regarding quality try not to put more than 160minutes of video in a single DVD rom.

hi! i'm posting again to say that i have burned a successful dvd. this time i use dvd+r and it works. i guess my writer doesn't recognize dvd-r.
anyway, can i ask more questions?
am not sure how to explain this. my screen resolution is 1280 x 800. when i tried viewing what i have on disc the resolution is only around 700 x 350 though the source video is also with the same resolution (700x350 more or less) but the source video is an .avi file. when i opened the source video and watch it on full scrren, the video occupies most of my screen but with the dvd, it only occupies the center of my screen (probably around 6"x4"). has this something to do with the video resolution that i have chosen before VSO converts avi file to dvd? what should i do if i want the video on my dvd to have the same resolution as my screen or the same as the avi file (when in full screen)?
thanks in advance.

am not sure how to explain this. my screen resolution is 1280 x 800. when i tried viewing what i have on disc the resolution is only around 700 x 350 though the source video is also with the same resolution (700x350 more or less) but the source video is an .avi file. when i opened the source video and watch it on full scrren, the video occupies most of my screen but with the dvd, it only occupies the center of my screen (probably around 6"x4"). has this something to do with the video resolution that i have chosen before VSO converts avi file to dvd? what should i do if i want the video on my dvd to have the same resolution as my screen or the same as the avi file (when in full screen)? thanks in advance.

Heh, so dvd-r was the problem.
Open Settings -> TV Format. I think that DVD Resolution: Automatic is what you are looking for.

dazza,
By default ConvertXtoDVD doesn't support more than 15-20 seconds of audio playback in the menus. The duration depends on each template.
You can bypass this by modifying the .ini file of a template if you really want it.

Is there a way to know the duration of the background audio plays on the menu before actually burning the DVD? Thanks

Hi Chad,
there is no need to worry about that. ConvertXtoDVD will create an ISO file in the location you have selected in Preferences -> General. Your original videos will remain untouched.
If you are still worried copy your original videos the first time. You'll see how it works.

Submenus
I was looking for something that would allow me to make submenus. For instance:
Main Title Page

Is this capable of making custom submenus, or only main Title menu with video clips?

Hi RuMoR,
as far as I know you can burn mp3 and wav files with ConvertXtoDVD. In fact I run it and I couldn't select an mp3 file. It only converts video clips to DVD. :/
You can test it by yourself. Just free download ConvertXtoDVD.

I could deal with the MP3 aspect by possibly using a video AVI file (fractal designs) with MP3 background music. The Submenu part was something that I was more interested in actually. Can I split my main title screen to Play the movie, or have it go to ANOTHER menu set that allows me to do other things, for instance put a text area that EXPLAINS the clips, people involved, running time, etc..

I didn't quite understand what do you mean by "counter". However you can use VirtualDub to cut your file in 4 smaller ones. Read this guide:

chapter screen intro
First off, thank you very much for such a great guide. Step by step instructions with pictures makes it so easy to follow. Excellent.
I was hoping you could help with a particular dvd format in mind. I'm trying to make a dvd of one 90 minute movie with 10 chapters. I can easily do this with your guide. The trick is, I want it to load the chapter selection screen as soon as you put the dvd into the player. I don't want to have to choose to play the movie first.
Ideally, I would like to have a 14 second movie playing as the background while showing chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4. Then another movie as the background while showing chapters 5, 6, 7, and 8. I can't seem to figure out how to do that with only 1 movie to convert.
I can do something close with multiple movies, for example, if I wanted to make a dvd with 4 episodes of Lost. I have a background movie for the title menu parameter, and one for each title set parameter, but none for the chapters.
Hope you can help. If not, thanks anyway for the guide.

Hi christinakoh,
Thank you very much for your comment! I really appreciate it!
I don't have ConvertXtoDVD installed in the computer I am at the moment, but I can give it a try.
Have you tried the Don't create a title menu for a single movie? It might do what you want. I can't remember if it also depends on the template you are using whether it will show the chapter selection first or not. Try a few different templates and check the dvd with VLC.
Regarding your second question I don't remember ConvertXtoDVD to be able to do this. When I'll check I'll post back here.
Sorry I can't help you more at the moment.

Hey, i'm a fan of v2 but i gave v3 a try, it looks better, its simpler to use, but alas, cant seem to get me past this tiny, but annoying thing... In v2 u can define how many titles you want per page, something i can't seem to find in this one...is a stepback because if i want to use the "simple template" that's the most similar to v2, and put only 3 videos, it gets all cornered up instead of distributed by the entire page.
Found anyway around this?
Thx in advance

I have a couple of problems. first I don't want to create a root menu. second I have tried to make a title menu consisting of a nice background image and some background audio and I have also hidden the thumbnail. but when I played my menu on my DVD player the image was cropped from the sides. Its size is 1024 x 768 and I have an old TV that is not flat. the audio kept playing for only 28 seconds while its real time was 4 minutes. there was also a square outline in place of the thumbnail although I used the hidden option and the outline was not seen in the preview. Third and last, I used two subtitles one English and the other one is Arabic subtitle. the English subtitle worked perfectly but the Arabic subtitle was out of sync and I have already tested it with Media Player Classic and it worked perfectly. please help, and if this program doesn't have the options required please tell me of any other program that has. I will be very thankful.

Regarding the background audio ConvertXtoDVD by default plays only a few seconds, not the whole track.
If you read a few messages above you will find a bypass for this but it needs a little customization from you.
Regarding the audio sync issue I see that the latest ConvertXtoDVD versions have fixed some bugs. Make sure you are using the latest stable version. free download ConvertXtoDVD
Now for the menu thing you are asking my, I am leaving on vacations in a few hours and I can't check it right now. I'm sorry.

Hi axel I just tried the latest vers sion of convertxtodvd and the arabic subtitles are still not timed correctly. They are eleven minutes late
Anyway if there was another program specialized in making DVD subtitles Please let me know about it, and if there isn't then there's no problem. I don't use them anyway, just wanted them as an extra bonus. Anyway I'm sorry for asking too many questions but is there a way of making my video's black bars up and down equal in length? If there is a way then that would be great

In Settings -> DVD Specifications -> Aspect ratio if you choose the wide screen I guess convertxtodvd will add the black bars you want. However it might stretch your video. :/
You can also try avidemux.
Greg,
does this happen only with x264 videos? There is nothing in particular you have to do.. I searched the vso bug list but all isues about mkv format were closed. Are you using the latest version?

Does your dvd player play mp3 files or only audio cds? ConvertXtoDVd can do what you want in both cases. You can try some other software such as CopyToDVD
sankrit there isn't a direct option for what you want. Search the comments above. I've given again some instructions on how to do this. You have to manually edit some template files.

Hello. I have been using ConvertX for quite some time, and I love the program. The only thing I seem to have an issue with is burning a converted project to multiple DVDs. Let's say I convert a movie, and burn it to a disc. In order for me to burn another DVD copy, I have to convert the movie all over. I am sure there is a way to fix this problem, since I have seen the "Burn an already converted project" in the "Actions" tab. Could you please help me with this small issue?
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.

By default ConvertXtoDVD deletes the converted files after you burn them on a DVD. You can change this setting either through Settings -> Burning or when you are prompted to burn the DVD (look at picture 16 of this guide). Just disable this setting and then by using the "Burn an already converted project" in the "Actions" tab you can burn as many copies as you want.

If you save your project as an ISO file yes it is possible to burn it afterwards with Nero.
