Hi Montgal,

You can modify manually the .srt file just by opening it with a text editor. If you still want to use a software for this job, since you are using Windows you could try Subtitles Workshop. - axel

Jubler and DVD MovieFactory Pro 7

Hello Everyone:

This may seem like an odd combination between the two programs. I have a video(MPEG2 format) that is in English and French. The French scenes are long so when the English scenes come along, understanding the movie could prove difficult.

I do have the .SRT file, and it works perfectly. But it is also including English subtitles, which I don't want. It was suggested to me that I create my own .SFT file to add to the video. DVD MovieFactory Pro 7, though a superb program, cannot modify .SFT files.

Hence, surfing the Internet lead me here to this discussion thread. My game plan was to use Jubler to (a) add subtitles to the video, (b) import the finished(converted) video into DVD MovieFactory Pro 7 (c) burn to DVD.

I wanted to do it this way because DVDMFPro 7 allows me to create DVD menus with my videos.

Any thoughts . . . - Montgal

I'm sorry Cahlitox but I haven't seen this message before. From a little search in Google I see it has to do with the ffmped library. - axel

I cannot open my video like step 2... when i get to step 3, the window shows the jubler logo and not a preview of my video, with a red stripe in the top of the image that says "the FFD library is not active..."

the video I'm triying to work in, is a .mov format... - Cahlitox

You are welcome Theodore. :)

Just use the subtitles and avi files you already have to make your DVD. A very good program to convert avi to dvd in Linux is DeVeDe. You can read my How to create a custom DVD using DeVeDe guide. If you want a Windows application read my ConvertXtoDVD guide.

If you search my site you will find some more helpful guides about dvd authoring and dvd ripping. :) - axel

Axel thanks, didn't know it was that simple. You see I have quite a few films which I need to have subtitles for to serve my ...greek viewers ! Now do I have to do something else so when I convert the avi file to dvd the subtitles will be readable in greek iso you suggested ? Or that format is only for the VLC player? Rather than bother you, is there a site where I can find all the information I need about jubler, vlc and generally educate myself in all that stuff? Thanks again (you're my saviour) - Theodore

Hi Theodore.

Since you have found the Greek subtitles I don't think you need Jubler.

When you open the video file in VLC just configure the subtitles encoding to be cp-1250
or iso 8859-7. These are the encoding formats used by Windows. - axel

Hi there, new to jubler. Using VLC, i've downloaded an old film, found the greek subtitles but they read like : çÏëëßïijýĜ to give you an idea. Wondering how do i select all 912 subtitle lines to change the the fonts Hellas Arial which I have and whether such a thing would work at all. Do I have to have the Mplayer and Aspell in order to work jugler because I I am quite used to VLC. I would appreciate any sort of solution for a ...dummie like me !!!

That's rather strange silvano, since you see the subtitles in the output mode of Avidemux. Maybe a bug in the version of Avidemux you are using?? I can't think of anything else. :( - axel

no subs on saved AVI

I followed exactly the path of the tutorial, and got my srt file to work and display fine in AVIdemux (set in output mode). Thanx for that. However when I hit SAVE, it goes off encoding and creates the output file but... no subtitles on it! I tried playing it with VLC and QT Player, but I guess that doesn't matter. If the subs are hard printed in the video, no matter which player you use, you should see them.

What do I do wrong?

thnx

Ok, since you have solved the video quality problem and there is no limitation in the final format you can either keep the ripped avi you already have and use jubler to create the subtitles. Then give your customer the two files .avi and .srt so he can reproduce the video in his computer.

If you have a Windows installation I would recommend ConvertXtoDVD to convert the avi to DVD and add the subtitles. For Mac I don't know a program that can do this job.

Here is a ConvertXtoDVD guide

You can also embed the subtitles on the DVD and create a new DVD afterwards. iSkysoft DVD Creator for Mac is a popular application. I don't have a Mac to tell you more. - axel

Depends on what they want... I would imagine the latter as I got it as a DVD...

Anyway, I have taken advantage of some more pearls of wisdom dispensed in this page and using this:

3) In Configure
* Encoding Mode: Two Pass - Video Size
* Target Video size (MB): 700 or whatever you want.

I managed to improve the quality of the video in AVI (or I think it was.. getting confused here... too much info to be taken in:)) format - Andrea

Andrea are you trying to make a video with hardcoded subtitles that you can view it in any player? A video with external subtitles? Or burn the video and subtitles to a new dvd? - axel

Not sure...
Anyway, I have read somewhere that Avidemux does not add an extension to the files it produces... OK, I have added that by hand. So the latest produce has been made using MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid4), MP3 (LAME), MP4 (format).
Then I saved the file as xxx.mp4.
After about 25 minutes I got something out (much, much smaller than the file I obtained ripping the DVD, which, in turn, was about 1/7 than the DVD itself...), but Quickplayer would not open it as it says that it found an invalid "sample description".
However I tried with MPlayer and it did work fine, although for the first 9 secs I cannot see the image, but can read only the subtitles.
Any comments.

TIA

Hi again,

here is a quick update.
Managed to rip the DVD using Wordshare DVD Ripper.,
Avidemux now works, but the audio, when I try the preview, is crap (I can barely make up what they are saying... same problem with Jubler, BTW) while the mp4 file I got ripping the original is fine.. In any case I can see the subtitles.
Then, I have chosen MPEG-4 AVC (x264) for video
MP3 (LAME) for audio (both for no good reason).
When I try to output the video with subtitles, I get a NON-audio file (it doesn't even has an extension).
Humph... what now???

Thanks again. - Andrea

You can try to rip the DVD files instead of just copying them to your hard disk and then open them with avidemux. You can try dvd::rip for Linux or dvddecrypter for Windows. Or maybe handbreak. - axel

It seems that other people can open .VOB files no bother...
Also, since I have more than one file, I need to make sure that when you play the DVD you can see it all (not sure whether I need the option to switch the subtitles off, but probably it would do no harm, however that's probably a problem for later:)

Hi Axel,

thanks for the quick reply.
I am practising on a video I have on a DVD that was burned by my potential client (someone I have already worked in the past for some translation work).
When I copy the content of the DVD onto the hard disk you get a folder and inside you finsome 4 .vob files (which make out the video as a whole) and two .BUP and .IFO files.
What I have done is to choose the file that contains the beginning of the video, put some subtitles on it using Jubler and now I was trying to embed them using, as you advise, Avidemux. When I try to open the .vob file what I get is "This looks like an mpeg. Do you want to index it?" I say yes and the answer is: "There is several mpeg files, append them?" I say yes (for want of better things to say...), but the answer is in bold and reads: "can't open "/Users/andrea/Desktop/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB.idx":13 (Permission denied)
VIDEO_TS -> This is the folder where the file is
VTS_01_1.VOB -> This is the file itself.

Hope this makes it clearer :'( :'( :'(

Hi Andrea. How did you get the .VOB file? You can use mplayer to get an avidemux compatible .VOB file like this:

mplayer dvd://1 -dumpstream -dumpfile rippeddvd.vob - axel
